"Mezzojuso: Byzantine identity"
The Albanian identity of Mezzojuso has been able to keep alive over time a tradition of profound devotion to Byzantine iconography. The town, in which two different Christian cults coexist, still today preserves an enormous heritage of sacred icons which highlights an indissoluble and lasting bond between past and present. The artist, in this work, portrays Christ, in the blue and red of his robe, in the two suns above and in the open book which confirms his being “The Word”, he turns his eyes to those who look at him blessing . The attempt to transform a religious icon into an identity symbol was successful: Rame13’s project is aimed at the eyes of the people of Mezzojuso, it does not want to be a theological work, but a tribute to the feelings of a people, who recognize in this iconography your own identity.
