María Peña, known as Mapecoo, is a Spanish artist with a busy CV of exhibitions, mural projects, grants and awards that have attracted international attention. After graduating in Fine Arts from the University of Madrid she began traveling and ended up embracing a nomadic lifestyle. All his experiences have influenced his way of understanding the world and creating, in fact his works of art have a strong social content, multicultural influences and are fueled by personal experiences. Equipped with a critical spirit, she loves to explore the expressive possibilities of every medium, she states that her works “have the raison d’être of generating curiosity and uncomfortable questions, those that fuel critical thinking that favors change”.
“Golden Seeds”
The farmers advance scatteredly, mowing the wheat. Behind them the boundless, undulating expanse of the Sicilian fiefdom. The men load the sheaves of wheat onto mules and transport them to the threshing floors where they arrange them for threshing. To support the animals’ fatigue, man sings verses in which he invokes the sun, the wind and the Divinity. In the evening the work is done, the farmers fill the bags, load them on the mules and return to the village. These are the moments of the “Golden Parable”, which in 1955 Vittorio De Seta dedicated to hard work in the fields. In this work, the artist transforms hard work into grace. A woman with typically Sicilian features and very black hair, seems to offer us the fruit of her labor. The grains of wheat are already separated from the ear, the image of the horse tells of the work that precedes the last act. Woman is Nature, which now offers all of us the food of life. She is a powerful figure, who seems to convey the value of her independence and pride, while maintaining the grace of female nature.
