The fruits of the earth are the soul of the country that generates them. The town of Chiusa Sclafani, set in a jagged and sloping hilly landscape, has found its paradise in a fruit that marks its economic and social life. The cherry is not just a wonder that we can taste, but the pride of generations of growers in this area who have dedicated their lives to making it inimitable. Alon David Alonso’s mural is a tribute to the excellent local cherry production and its significance as part of the intangible heritage of Chiusa Sclafani and the value to be passed on from generation to generation. The work immerses us in a sort of simple happiness that enchants. It portrays Totò and Alfredo, protagonists of the film “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” in the act of picking cherries, the blue sky is the background. The symbolism is powerful, Alfredo represents tradition, which with difficulty carries on its shoulders the new generation, personified by little Totò, committed to reaping the fruits of a lifetime’s work. The protagonists are the cherries, collected in a small basket and still abundant on the branches, they represent the sweet fruits of a tradition that has given so much and has much more to give to future generations.
“Falcone e Borsellino”
Alon’s work portrays two martyrs of freedom, the defenders of the just who chose to give their lives so that ours would be worth living again. Caught in a moment of fraternal joy, Falcone and Borsellino laugh heartily, aware of a joy that no one can ever deny them, that of having fought for what they believed was right. Thanks to Alon’s brushes, the two magistrates will live forever there in Chiusa Sclafani too, their safe home is a school, which holds all the hopes for a better future of the area. The intent of the author, but above all of the country, is to convey to future generations a strong message on absolute respect for legality, only through the memory of our martyrs is it possible to be reborn. Giving young people the hope of a future free from mafias is a duty of each of us.
"Totò Cascio"
On a large wall, which closes the object of the work from a pictorial point of view, the little protagonist of Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, the splendid Totò Cascio, is painted and seems almost to be reborn. The artist wanted to describe what Cinema is. Cinema is joy, the joy that we read in the truly “childish” smile of the protagonist. It expresses that happiness that comes from wonder, from the depths of the heart, when one has experienced something that fills the soul only with sweetness, with joy, with perfect serenity. In his hands the little protagonist holds a film, or rather the frames of a film. After all, what are they if not the fragments of life that each film manages to capture? In the eyes of Totò Cascio who lived in a projection booth we read a certainty, cinema is not just an art, but a way to live and dream of life itself.
