Mariana Duarte Santos was born in 1995 in Lisbon. Graduated from art high school, she subsequently studied drawing and engraving at university. Despite his young age he is establishing himself among the greatest street art artists in the world. His works reflect the way he perceives the world: always veiled by a feeling of nostalgia, they focus mainly on the concepts of memory, collective identity and local stories. Her artistic path is certainly influenced by cinema and literature, Mariana in fact presents herself as a silent narrator who wants to investigate, through her works, the subjects portrayed, their emotional state and the situations they experience.
The Life is Beautiful
The mural represents the last scene of Frank Capra’s film, shot in 1946, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. George Bailey, the protagonist, is a man who lives dedicating himself with love to all the people he meets, often giving up his own dreams and ambitions. The aim of his life and his work is the realization of the dreams of his fellow citizens. It happens, in a moment of great crisis, that George thinks of putting an end to it. He goes out of town, onto a bridge, thinking of jumping into the river. Suddenly the angel Clarence saves him. You will see, says the angel, what the lives of others would have been like if you had never been born. George will discover what people’s lives would have been if he hadn’t been part of it, he recognizes that the meaning of life is only to become indispensable to all the people we love. Mariana Santos’ mural photographs the moment of happiness that arises only from love, the intense embrace of the finale, in which the very meaning of life is rediscovered.
